Come Out and Sing for Fun

We invite you to consider membership in one of Cleveland’s finest musical traditions — The Singers’ Club of Cleveland.

We are a men’s chorus that for over 115 years has provided an opportunity for serious non-professional singers to perform substantial choral works.  We present three formal public concerts each year (December, March and May). These concerts many times include orchestration and guest artists.

A smaller group of the Club — The Centennials — perform several additional for fee concerts during the year.

The Singers’ Club promotes the art of choral music through scholarship awards. We invite the most accomplished male vocalists to our annual competition. Winners receive cash awards.

While the primary focus of our organization is the presentation of music, we always strive to enjoy ourselves. There are a number of member social events during the year that include wives and significant others that build the friendships which have allowed the Club its longevity.

A Rich Tradition

The Singers’ Club first performed at Association Hall in Cleveland on May 19, 1892. Public concerts have been given every year since, giving the Club the longest continuous performance history in the city. Concert locations have varied over the years, and have included the Masonic Auditorium, Severance Hall (including several appearances with The Cleveland Orchestra), the Ohio Theater, the Gartner Auditorium of the Cleveland Museum of Art, and presently Waetjen Auditorium at Cleveland State University.

The club has its share of colorful characters. The list of past presidents, members, and conductors is long and distinguished. Melvin Unger is our current music director. Dr. Unger is also director of the Riemenschneider Bach Institute at Baldwin-Wallace College.

The Club currently has approximately 50 active singers.

We have collected and maintained a substantial music library, with over 60,000 pieces of music. We actively seek new repertoire and often commission new works for our concerts.

Membership

To become a member of The Singers’ Club of Cleveland, candidates must audition. We encourage prospective members to prepare a song to present in the audition. An accompanist is provided, if needed. In the audition, we also evaluate vocal range, accuracy of pitch, and music reading ability. Auditions are held throughout the concert season.

Once accepted into the Club, members are responsible for dues and their concert attire—white tie and tails. First year dues are waived for new members. Reduced dues are granted for members under the age of 35, and student members pay no dues.

We meet from the first Tuesday in September through mid May. Rehearsals are on Tuesday evenings from 7:15 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.at Cleveland State University.

If you wish to join the Singers’ Club, or find out more about our organization, please contact our membership chairman, Bob Bathgate, or our business manager, Tom Evans through the Club’s answering service (216-556-4405). Or leave a message on our feedback page.
