Singers' Club Hit Parade

May 18, 2008

A concert of favorite music from recent seasons. The program will range widely in style and mood, from Irving Berlin’s lighthearted Puttin’ on the Ritz and Aaron Copland’s Ching-A-Ring Chaw to stirring pieces like Joseph Martin’s The Awakening and Randall Thompson’s The God Who Gave Us Life Gave Us Liberty (from “The Testament of Freedom”). Captivating works include Franz Biebl’s Ave Maria and Bring Him Home from “Les Miserables.” A special feature of the concert was performances by winners of recent S. Livingston Mather Scholarship Competitions.

The concert featured Benjamin Britten's The Company of Heaven, a beautiful cantata for SATB chrous, orchestra and narrators. Vocal soloists for this work were Annie Chon and Timonty Mussard. Plus, there was a generous helping of holiday favorites, including new settings of carols paried with familar arrangements.

Synergy

The Singers’ Club closes its 111th season with the presentation of Synergy, a concert filled with artistic combinations. Joanne Uniatowski sings Brahms’ Alto Rhapsody with the chorus and a chamber orchestra. Timothy Mussard presents a sampling of operatic arias, and with soprano Annie Chon-Mussard and the chorus, a scene from Wagner’s Tannhäuser. A variety of choral works complete a remarkable musical evening.

20th-Century Choral Classics

The Singers' Club presents two of the finest choral works of this century. In Leonard Bernstein's Chichester Psalms the Club is joined by the Ohio Boychoir, a counter-tenor soloist and chamber musicians. Then Isaiah Jackson and the Youngstown Symphony Orchestra and Chorus join the men's and boy's choruses in a robust performance of Carl Orff's Carmina Burana.

The British Are Coming!

Wine, Women, 'n Song

The concert is a mixture of songs about wine and women including a setting by Arthur Frackenpohl based on verses by Ogden Nash - Essays on Women. The second half is a mixture of nostalgic songs about subjects.
