The S. Livingston Mather Scholarship Competition
October 4, 2009

RULES AND PROCEDURES

1.

Male vocalists engaged in full-time or substantial part-time study of music, progressing toward the goal of an undergraduate or graduate degree, are eligible to participate in the competition. Previous competitors and award recipients may also compete, so long as they meet eligibility requirements and adhere to all competition rules.

2.

Apply on line at www.singersclub.org/scholarship. Applications must be received by The Singers’ Club of Cleveland by no later than midnight Wednesday September 30, 2009. Background information is available at the above link.

3.

Applicants shall perform three works for the competition, limited to ten minutes total performance time. The works shall include an opera or oratorio aria and an art song; the third selection is at the applicant’s discretion. At least one work shall be sung in English. The titles and composers of these works and the name of the applicant’s accompanist shall be submitted as part of the application form.

4.

Applicants shall provide a glossy photograph or an electronic image for publicity purposes. The photograph can be mailed or brought to the competition. Digital files may be emailed to scholarship@singersclub.org.

5.

The competition will begin at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, October 4, 2009 in the ballroom of Judson Manor, 1890 East 107th Street, Cleveland, OH. Warmup space will be provided.

6.

The Scholarship Committee will assign each applicant a performance time on the date of the date of the competition. Performing at the scheduled time is a prerequisite to be considered for the scholarship. If an applicant has conflicting obligations, he must inform the Scholarship Committee when he submits his application. Efforts will be made to accommodate schedule requests, though no warranty is made regarding custom scheduling. Applicants should arrive 15–20 minutes before their scheduled performance time to warm up and allow for schedule contraction.

7.

A panel of judges will assess the applicants’ performances and identify award recipients; the panel’s decisions are final. The Scholarship Committee will notify competitors individually of the competition results, during the week following the competition.

8.

The competition winner will be named the S. Livingston Mather Scholar, and will receive an award of $1,500. The second place competitor will be named the George L. Hackett Scholar, and will receive an award of $1,400. Up to three additional Albert Rees Davis Scholars may be named, each of whom will receive awards of $1,250. All scholarships will be awarded at the panel’s sole discretion.

9.

Award recipients are encouraged to participate in the 2009–2010 rehearsal and concert schedule of the Singers’ Club of Cleveland. Award recipients may be invited to perform as soloists in Singers’ Club concerts as opportunity permits, and may also be invited perform in recital for benefactors. Details of such opportunities will be developed in conjunction with the Music Director and Scholarship Committee during the course of the season.

The Mather Scholar is supported by the S. Livingston Mather Charitable Trust.
The Hackett and Albert Rees Davis Scholars are supported by the Albert Rees Davis Endowment Fund.
